Word Study

Word Study in Grades K and 1 is delivered in large part via the Fundations program.  First Grade's Level 1 of Fundations reinforces the basic skills taught in Kindergarten and progresses further into the study of word structure and meaning.  Students are also taught using other resources, as needed, to meet the needs of all learners.

Key concepts taught during Grade One word study include:
  1. Phonological Awareness
  2. Letter  /  Sound Mastery
  3. Phonics
  4. Spelling
  5. Automaticity of handwriting
  6. Vocabulary
  7. High Frequency "Trick" Words
  8. Punctuation and Capitalization

Some of the primary basic skills that first graders are expected to master by year-end include:
  1. Segment syllables into sounds - up to five sounds
  2. Letter / sound recognition of all consonants, short/long vowels and digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh, ck)
  3. Distinguish long and short vowel sounds
  4. Print all upper and lowercase letters, and apply to daily written work
  5. Name sounds for r-controlled vowels (ar, er, ir, or, ur)
  6. Read and use conventional spelling for words with phonetically regular spelling patterns
  7. Read and spell 100 high frequency words (Trick Words)
  8. Identify word structures:  consonant blends, digraphs, baseboards and suffixes (-s, -ed, -ing)
  9. Read and spell compound words and other two-syllable words
  10. Construct complete sentences
  11. Apply correct punctuation and capitalization rules
  12. Identify and explain new meanings for familiar words and newly taught words

Word study skills are taught whole group, small group and one-on-one as needed.  Skills are often practiced during our center-time block.  Hands-on materials such as letter tiles and whiteboards are utilized regularly by each student, as well as via tablet applications.  Children also often work in partnerships to practice reading and spelling words as they relate to a specific skill.  For example, ask your first grader about "PARTNER MAKING WORDS".

Though we have many word study priorities for first graders, one main goal is that through explicit instruction, hands-on practice, ongoing review and regular application of skills in real-life contexts (reading and writing), children will gain a solid foundation in phonics / spelling, and develop strong word-building fluency.
